OLEFA - Development, History & Milestones

by OLEFA inventor and Oli.lu creator Jos Kirps

I was maintaining a timeline of all important OLEFA updates from 2002-2007. Note that this page only includes the most important changes.

OLEFA 0.X (ALPHA)

Late 2000, developed by Jos Kirps under the WobbleWolf Label, not used on production systems. Included the MPM / CMS, OLEFAbase DBMS, user management, and media management (Resources Manager)

OLEFA 0.X (BETA)

January 2001, first used on production systems, licensed to Ka Communications.

OLEFA 0.X (BETA)

Mid 2001, included the Wiki, DBMS updated to manage libraries. First version to have been used on a school website (Roeser).

OLEFA 1.0

OLEFA 1.0 - from October 2002 (1.0.0) to February 2003 (1.0.4).  First version licensed to EducDesign SA.

OLEFA 1.1 (March 2003 | build 0L972)

enhanced database architecture

OLEFA 1.2 (April 2003 | 1M53)

new driver architecture

OLEFA 1.3 (September 2003)

The first major update became available in September 2003, OLEFA 1.3 added a new modular wiki format and the automated Linux fileserver. The idea for the fileserver was quite old, I developed the idea and concept a long time before the creation of EducDesign, must have been in 2001 or so. I wrote the entire code for the fileserver management on only one weekend at my home in Ehlerange (note that the first release only supported Linux and Mac clients, Windows support was added later on). I can't remember exactly when I began work on the new modular wiki concept, this must have been in 2002 or early 2003.

OLEFA 1.3.0 (Oct 2003 | build 1N762) new wiki manager, fileserver
OLEFA 1.3.3 (Jan 2004 | build 1N948) network & fileserver improvements

OLEFA 1.4 (June 2004)

I started to launch new major releases on my birthday (that's June 21). OLEFA 1.4 was released on June 21st 2004 and featured completely rewritten administration tools, a new theme based administration interface as well as OSA, the first release of a unified OLEFA System API. I created the idea and concept for the webbook application during an afternoon in my car while I was in Belgium. The following weekend I programmed a working prototype at my home in Ehlerange. The webbook was released in August 2004. The currently available OLEFA webbook is not very different from the one that I initially created in 2004.

OLEFA 1.4.0 (June 21st 2004 | build 2P26) new administration
OLEFA 1.4.2 (August 2004 | build 2Q369) improved wiki manager, added webbook
OLEFA 1.4.3 (September 2004 | build 2R455) new resources manager
OLEFA 1.4.4 (October 2004 | build 2R517) new system api
Continued till May 2005 (OLEFA 1.4.11, build 4S516)

OLEFA 1.5 (June 2005)

OLEFA 1.5 was released on June 21, 2005. OLEFA 1.5 was the first release that included code by other developers too. The idea for OLEFAdesk, a web based OS (aka WebOS), was very old - maybe even older than OLEFA itself. I had been working on such concepts in 2000 or before already, I remember to have used SGI (Silicon Graphics) icons for my first prototypes back then. One of the applications that is part of OLEFAdesk is the OLEFA Schoolmanager, which allows to manager teachers and students. The Schoolmanager also includes a training module, this is in fact code I had already written in 1999 for my own students when I was working as a teacher. OLEFA 1.5 was introduced on June 21st 2005 and released 2 weeks later in early July. Core enhancements came first, followed by the release of OLEFAdesk and OLEFA EiS.

OLEFE EiS (Enterprise Intelligence System) was one of my favourite projects. My idea was to create a set of business tools including a CRM and project management tools. I think that my basic concept for it was quite innovative - it included a highly flexible address management system, a product database, an invoice generation tool and a ticket system (that's a software that helps tracking e-mails in a company). The EiS was discontiuned in 2007.

OLEFA 1.5.0 (July 2005 | build 5G0411) enhanced administration
OLEFA 1.5.1 (August 2005 | build 5H0117) OLEFAdesk
OLEFA 1.5.2 (September 2005 | build 5J0517) OLEFA EiS
OLEFA 1.5.9 (April 2006 | build 6D0314) storyboard & sound recorder
Continued till June 2006 (OLEFA 1.5.11, build 6F0609)

OLEFA 6 (June 2006)

OLEFA 6 was released on June 21, 2006. OLEFA 6 introduced the OLEFA site navigator, new administration features (wizards), the OLEFA search engine technology, AFELO, tiparlo, the OLEFA EDU version, code enhancements, OLEFAscriptNG as well as many other new features.

I think I must have had the idea for AFELO in 2004 or 2005. AFELO was the second Java project after the Sound Recorder, Tim Gottwald started developing it in early 2006. I had a clear vision of what the app should look like and the concept was well defined so that we could expect a fast progress. I don't use AFELO anymore, as it's being "released under the GPL" while EducDesign doesn't publish the code anymore.

OLEFA Tiparlo is an application that allows to record voices via web and to rearrange them. It's more or less something like TEO, an application created by the Luxembourgish Ministry of Education many years ago.

In early 2006 I had to come up with something really new, I started work on new ideas and a few days later I came up with the OLEFA Storyboard concept. I had designed the original interface concept on a piece of paper while sitting around in a music school in Esch/Alzette on a Saturday morning, based on this I started programming a prototype the same evening that included a basic interface as well as an OLEFAbot. The OLEFAbots weren't really new, in fact I reused characters from my 3D animation movie Stag Wards (www.stagwards.com) from 1999. My prototype code had been created in a hurry and it was not reused. The OLEFA storyboard was released in April 2006 along with the new sound recorder.

The OLEFA Sound Recorder was released in April 2006, it's a JAVA applet that allows to record sound directly on a website.

OLEFA 6 was introduced on June 21st 2006. OLEFA 6 introduced AFELO, Tiparlo and various other enhancements.
OLEFA 6.7 (July 2006 | build 6G1916) was the original release

OLEFA 7 (January 2007)

OLEFA 7 was the first major release that didn't offer any new big features at all, but lots of code enhancements. OLEFA 7 was the most stable and reliable version for years.
OLEFA 7 was released in early 2007, it offered a large number of OSA (OLEFA System API) enhancements and I think it was much more stable and reliable than OLEFA 6. OLEFA 7 also market the end of OLEFA EiS, the entire EiS must have been removed from the OLEFA software distribution with one of the first OLEFA 7 releases. OLEFA 7i was released in September 2007, it offered an optional alternative user interface. As far as I remember this option was removed later on (perhaps with OLEFA 9, but I'm not quite sure).

OLEFA 7.4 (April 2007 | build 7D2015)
OLEFA 7.9i (September 2007) interface enhancements that were later removed by EducDesign in 2008 or 2009.
OLEFA 7 should have been the first NG release, but the NG technology was killed in the 2007/2008 timeframe.

OLEFA NG (never released)

OLEFA NG (Next-Generator) should have been a greatly enhanced version of both the software and the educational concept.
OLEFA inventor and chief architect Jos Kirps left EducDesign after the company showed no interest in the project.
OLEFA 8 was released instead, it was only a slightly enhanced version of OLEFA 7.

Later versions (2008-today)

EducDesign continued to maintain the software, based on the original OLEFA concept.

Oli.lu / Morzino

After I left EducDesign in 2008, I started work on the Oli.lu / Morzino platform.
